Methylation happens when a small molecule called a methyl group is added to other molecules. When methylation doesn't work correctly, it can lead to the buildup of homocysteine—an amino acid—in the blood. Vitamins B12, B6, and folate help convert homocysteine into usable compounds like cysteine and glutathione.
If you take too much folic acid (not folate), have vitamin B12 deficiency, or have MTHFR polymorphisms that affect methylation, you may have an abnormally high concentration of homocysteine in your blood because your body can't break it down for use. These elevated homocysteine levels can wreak havoc and disrupt your body's normal inflammatory response.
Our best-selling Homocysteine Nutrients provide the 5 nutrients your body requires for optimal methylation: folate, riboflavin 5’-phosphate, betaine, B12, and pyridoxal 5’-phosphate. Optimal Multivitamin Chewable is a tasty and convenient way to support methylation with active B vitamins, including methylfolate and B12. Another best-seller, Methyl B12 with L-Methylfolate, provides methylation, homocysteine, and MTHFR support in a well-absorbed lozenge.†
